Printing

Every printable document opens in a new browser tab as an ordinary page that starts the browser's print dialog.

Tip

Because it is an ordinary page, you can also save it as a PDF from the print dialog. The tab can be closed without disturbing the program.

Where to print from#

The Print tab lists every document, with a short description and a Print… button. A document that needs a paired round is greyed out until the first round is paired. Several documents can also be reached from the page they belong to: the Pairings page has Print pairings while a round is played and the rest in More, under Print; the Players page has Print player list and, in More, Print place cards, the Standings page has Print, the postponed games list has the notices.

A tournament logo (Settings, Tournament, Logo, advanced until one is set) is printed on the documents. Print documents of a tournament in which a postponed game is still open, or a board has no result, carry a line saying that the figures are not final.

The rating printed beside a player (pairing lists, standings, cross table, cards, score sheets) is the tournament rating: the one the tournament's Tournament rating setting picks (Settings, Options; see Players and rating lists). Its column is headed Elo when the FIDE rating leads, Nat. when the national rating does, and Rtg for the highest-of or typed-by-hand methods.

The documents of an individual tournament#

DocumentWhat it is
Player listAll registered players: title, name, ratings, federation, club.
Player cardsOne card per player with every round of the tournament: date, board, colour, opponent, result and running score. A round robin's card is filled in for every round, the rounds not paired yet included; a Swiss card has the rounds played filled in and the rest left to fill in. Tick blank, to fill in by hand for empty cards. The Players page's Players Card of a round robin prints the same card for one player.
Schedule (all rounds)Round robin only: every round with its date and boards, both players with their pairing numbers and ratings, and the byes - the rounds not paired yet included (see below). Ticks: with results (off prints a blank schedule for the wall) and with postponed dates (a postponed game shows postponed to the agreed date and the venue instead of its *).
Pairing listThe boards of a round, to post at the venue. The Pairings page also offers Pairings, with absentees section, which adds the players who are not playing, with the value of the round for each. A player with a fixed table is marked, for example 5 (table 5).
Alphabetical pairing list"Where do I sit": the players sorted by name, to find your board.
StandingsThe ranking with the points and the tie-breaks.
Result cardsOne card per board of a round, eight to an A4 page, with the names, ratings, pairing numbers and the three results to circle, a line for another result, and signature boxes. Byes are skipped.
Score sheetsOne pre-filled sheet per board: names, ratings, move columns and signatures.
Cross tableThe full results grid. A Swiss or Keizer tournament gets one row per player in standing order and one column per round; each cell reads opponent's pairing number, colour, result (12w1: White against number 12, won). A round robin gets the classic players-by-players grid, with every cycle's result in the same cell when everyone plays everyone more than once.
Place cardsOne folded tent card per player on a full A4 page (see below). On the Print tab, and on the Players page.
Postponed-game noticesOne slip per player of every open postponed game (Entering results).
Next-round previewThe boards that are fixed whatever the open results are, with a list by name for name cards (Pairing a round). On the Print tab once you have worked it out on the Pairings page; until then there is nothing to print.

A tournament with rooms (Settings, Rooms) gets a Room column on both pairing lists, beside the board number. Without rooms there is no such column.

Which round#

The pairing list, result cards and score sheets take a round: the Print page uses the latest paired round, and the Pairings page prints the round you are looking at. In the address of a print page ?round=N selects a round. The pairing list defaults to round 1 and the result cards to the latest paired round if you leave it out. A round that is not paired gives the answer Round N has not been paired yet, not another round. Such a refusal (and the next-round preview that has not been worked out) opens as a small page with the reason and a link back to the Print page, in the same tab. The standings print takes a round in the same way (?round=N) and then shows the standings as they stood after that round.

The schedule of a round robin#

A round robin's rounds are fixed by its Berger table, so the schedule and the player cards print every round, also the ones not paired yet. Those rounds are worked out by the same code that pairs them, so what is on paper is what Pair will give - with two provisos, which the printout states above the rounds:

  • Before round 1 is paired the whole schedule is provisional. The table is fixed by the first pairing; until then a new entry, a withdrawal or new starting numbers change it.
  • After that a round not paired yet is marked not paired yet. It changes only if you swap rounds, pair a round by hand or change the cycles or the categories. In a team round robin the line-ups of those rounds are the rosters as they stand now: an absence or a reserve changes who sits down, never which teams meet.

The dates are the round dates from Settings, Dates. A double round robin prints both cycles. In the address ?results=0 and ?postponed=0 turn the two ticks off, and the player cards take ?blank=1.

One category only#

When the tournament has categories, the Print page gets a Print for selector above the documents. Choose a category and the links of the player list, player cards, pairing lists, result cards, score sheets, standings and cross table carry ?category= (the place cards and the next-round preview accept it too) and print that category alone; the choice stays in the address, so a reload keeps it, and the subtitle of the printout names the category. Pairings, result cards and score sheets keep only the boards where a player of the category sits, with the board numbers as they were. The standings show just that category's table, ranked by place within the category. In a tournament paired by category each player belongs to the category they are paired in; otherwise a player is in every category they are tagged with. Team documents are not affected.

Result cards: test print and stack cutting#

  • Result cards: test print (first 3) prints three cards, to check the alignment of your printer before you print a stack.
  • Result cards: stack-cut order orders the cards so that after you print every page, stack the printout and cut it in eight strips with a guillotine, each pile is in board order. Slots that remain empty at the end are printed blank.

Place cards#

Each player gets a whole A4 page divided at the middle by a fold line. The top half is printed upright and the bottom half the other way up, so that when the sheet is folded with the print on the outside and stood up as a tent, it reads correctly from both sides of the board. The address takes switches to show or hide fields: ?title=, ?rating=, ?federation=, ?club=, ?board= (each accepts 0 to turn the field off). By default the card shows the name, title, rating and the board of the latest paired round; federation and club are off. The board line is left out if no round is paired.

The documents of a team tournament#

Team pairings (a table per match with the boards, colours, ratings and result), team standings, team cross table (round robin: team by team with the game points; Swiss: opponent, colour of board 1, match score and running match points per round), match result sheets (one A4 page per match with both line-ups, result boxes, the match score and signature lines for both captains and the arbiter), team rosters and board prizes (per board number, the players ranked by percentage, points and performance, with an optional minimum number of games), the individual ranking (every player who played, by points, percentage and rating; one series on request) and line-up forms (blank), one page per team for the captains to fill in before a round. The match sheets show each player's FIDE ID and the average rating each team fielded. See Teams.

A team round robin also has its schedule (all rounds): every round with its date and matches, and per match the boards with both players, the colours and, with with results, the results and the match score; untick with board line-ups for the matches alone. Team schedules prints one sheet per team: per round the opponent, the date, the team's colour on board 1, the match score and the running match points. A player's card shows per round the team the player's team meets, the board, the colour, the opponent and the result.

Accreditation badges#

A6 badges, two to an A4 sheet, are made in a separate tool: Advanced, Badges. A badge has a name, photo, title, federation, FIDE ID, a coloured role banner, up to twelve numbered rooms, logos and a QR code. An event linked to a tournament imports its players and officials; press, VIP and staff badges are added by hand. See Categories and norms for the other tools under Advanced.

Printing the FIDE forms#

The IT3, FA1, IA1 and IT4 forms are filled-in Excel files from Advanced, Norms, not print pages (Categories and norms).
